Cody Park Railroad Museum is an outdoor display collection in North Platte's Cody Park, and its setting explains its holdings: North Platte grew from the Union Pacific's arrival in 1866 and remains a railroad town anchored by the company's Bailey Yard, the largest rail yard in the world. The museum's two flagship locomotives are both Union Pacific giants. Challenger No. 3977 — one of only two surviving 4-6-6-4s, both former UP engines — sits on static display in the park, and alongside it stands Centennial No. 6922, one of the dozen EMD DDA40X diesels preserved at museums around the country.
