History

See full history

Cody Park Railroad Museum is an outdoor display collection in North Platte's Cody Park, and its setting explains its holdings: North Platte grew from the Union Pacific's arrival in 1866 and remains a railroad town anchored by the company's Bailey Yard, the largest rail yard in the world. The museum's two flagship locomotives are both Union Pacific giants. Challenger No. 3977 — one of only two surviving 4-6-6-4s, both former UP engines — sits on static display in the park, and alongside it stands Centennial No. 6922, one of the dozen EMD DDA40X diesels preserved at museums around the country. Per the operator's listing, the displays are static with no public rides, admission is free, and the collection is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
