About Flushing Area Historical Society

Step into Flushing's railroad past at the restored 1888 depot, now the Flushing Area Museum and Cultural Center, in a Flint River town first reached by the Toledo and Ann Arbor Railroad. Browse local-history exhibits in the very building where trains once called, then stretch your legs on the nearby Riverview Trail, which follows the Flint River and links to Flushing County Park for an easy small-town Michigan afternoon.

History

Flushing's rail story began in 1888, when the railroad first reached town: the Toledo and Ann Arbor Railroad, headed by John Ashley, connected Flushing to Durand and Saginaw, and a railroad engine crossed the Flint River for the first time on February 7, 1889, reaching the Hart and Clark mill. The line survives today under the ownership of the Huron and Eastern Railway, while the depot built in that founding year of 1888 has been restored and now serves as the Flushing Area Museum and Cultural Center, the local-history museum associated with the Flushing Area Historical Society. The museum preserves the heritage of a Genesee County community that grew up along the Flint River where the old Saginaw Trail country between Detroit and the Saginaw River gave way to rail-era settlement.

The Trains

The principal artifact here is the building itself: the restored 1888 depot from the Toledo and Ann Arbor Railroad's arrival in Flushing, now operating as the Flushing Area Museum and Cultural Center. The gathered sources document no locomotives or rolling stock in the collection — this is a depot museum of local and railroad history rather than an operating railway, though freight trains still use the adjacent line under Huron and Eastern Railway ownership.
