About Steam Railroading Institute
Steam Railroading Institute is the public identity of the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation, a nonprofit based in the former Ann Arbor Railroad steam shops and roundhouse area in Owosso. The Trains
Pere Marquette 1225 is a 1941 Lima-built 2-8-4 Berkshire that the current official equipment page identifies as operating. It leads the North Pole Express marketing, but every ride retains an explicit diesel-substitution disclaimer. Chicago & North Western 175, a 1908 4-6-0, is under restoration and is not represented as current ride power. Consumers Energy 1155, an SW1200-type switcher donated in 2023, is used occasionally on excursions and for yard work; leased locomotive 57 is available through spring 2028; and the 25-ton 'Mighty Mouse' is the primary yard switcher. The passenger collection includes ten former Canadian National coaches, several with head-end power, heating and air-conditioning, plus diners, cabooses, troop sleepers and support cars. Exact consist, class layout and locomotive remain controlled by the selected ticket and day-of-operation conditions.

Pere Marquette 1225 entered service in 1941 and retired in 1951. Chesapeake & Ohio helped place it at Michigan State University in 1957 as an engineering teaching object. Students formed the Michigan State University Railroad Club in 1969 and spent years restoring the locomotive. The group became the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation in 1979, received 1225 from MSU in 1981 and moved it to the former Ann Arbor Railroad backshop in Owosso in 1982. The locomotive moved under its own power in 1985 and has been maintained in operable condition since 1988. The organization now presents itself publicly as the Steam Railroading Institute while preserving, exhibiting and operating a broader Great Lakes railroad collection.
