About Indiana Rail Experience

Indiana Rail Experience is the public excursion program of the volunteer Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in partnership with the Indiana Northeastern Railroad. Its 2026 season mixes steam and diesel excursions, themed events, holiday trains and hands-on locomotive sessions across product-specific boarding points in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Pleasant Lake is the recurring station anchor, not a universal boarding guarantee; every ticket holder must follow the selected product's rendezvous instructions.

The Trains

Nickel Plate Road 765, a 1944 Berkshire steam locomotive, is the society's flagship and is assigned to selected 2026 products. Nickel Plate Road 358 is an operating diesel used on named diesel experiences. Passenger trains may include open-window cars, traditional coaches, a dining car, Pullman and lounge equipment, but the operator says each train varies and substitutions can occur. The six selected photographs all predate 2026 and do not prove a current route, locomotive assignment, consist, condition or accessibility.

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society began preservation work in 1972 and is a volunteer 501(c)(3). Its best-known project is the restoration and operation of Nickel Plate Road No. 765. In 2022 the society and Indiana Northeastern Railroad created Indiana Rail Experience, using a regional freight network across Indiana, Michigan and Ohio for public heritage operations. The consumer hub therefore uses Indiana Rail Experience while preserving the society as legal parent and stewardship identity.

Can children do Throttle Time?

Engineer participants must be at least 18 with a valid driver's license. The steam fireman role is 16+ and all participants must meet the stated mobility and safety requirements.

Can I bring food?

Rules vary by trip. Review the exact product; Fall Colors permits food and nonalcoholic drinks, while premium and holiday products have class-specific service.

Do the photos show the 2026 route?
