About National New York Central Railroad Museum

The National New York Central Railroad Museum sits in Elkhart, Indiana, inside a restored 1900 Lake Shore & Michigan Southern freight house opposite the Norfolk Southern east‑west main line, where freight trains pass about every fifteen minutes. Visitors view a static collection that includes the NYC 3001 Mohawk locomotive, a 4‑8‑4 GG‑1 cab, and a modified 20th Century Limited train set, alongside indoor model railroads and artifacts that illustrate the region’s rail heritage.

History

Elkhart first became a rail hub in 1833 when the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway constructed a line through the town, a route later absorbed by the New York Central Railroad in 1914. The museum’s freight house, originally built by the LS&MS in 1907, later housed the collection of the Lakeshore Railroad Historical Foundation, which donated the artifacts and sold the property to the City of Elkhart in early 1987. The National New York Central Railroad Museum was formally founded that same year, and after two years of planning it opened its doors to the public on May 1, 1989. On October 9, 2024 the museum announced a partnership with the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society to revitalize the site and develop a new master plan for its outdoor equipment displays.

The Trains

The museum’s static collection features New York Central 3001, a Mohawk‑type 4‑6‑0 locomotive, together with a 4‑8‑4 GG‑1 cab unit and a variety of passenger and freight cars displayed in the restored 1900 NYC freight house. The site sits beside Norfolk Southern’s east‑west main line, where NS freight trains pass roughly every fifteen minutes, and lies within walking distance of Amtrak’s Elkhart Station, which provides daily Lake Shore Limited service between Chicago and Boston/New York and Capitol Limited service between Chicago and Washington, D.C. All equipment operates on standard‑gauge (4 ft 8½ in) track.

Nearby
