About Gold Coast Railroad Museum

At the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, adjacent to Zoo Miami, vintage diesel excursions run each weekend, offering a 35‑minute round‑trip through over three miles of track that includes the southernmost active railroad trackage in the continental United States. Standard‑gauge cars and locomotive cabs welcome riders, while a free children’s caboose provides a separate experience. The museum’s narrow‑gauge Edwin Link Children’s Railroad also operates, adding another playful ride option.

The Trains

The museum maintains more than 50 pieces of rolling stock, including the Florida East Coast locomotive “153,” the Presidential Pullman car “Ferdinand Magellan,” and the East Swamp & Gatorville Railroad 2‑ft (610 mm) narrow‑gauge 4‑4‑0 locomotive #3 built by Crown Metal Products; its standard‑gauge collection also features cars such as the FEC Heavyweight Passenger #136, ACL Wood M‑3 Caboose #0322, and WP “Silver Crescent” CZ‑10/WP 881. Over three miles of track run on the former Naval Air Station Richmond, with standard‑gauge excursions operating most Saturdays and a separate 2‑ft narrow‑gauge Edwin Link Children’s Railroad providing rides on its own line.

History

See full history

The Gold Coast Railroad Museum originates in 1956, the year its organizational entity is recorded as being established. The museum formally opens its doors in 1957, constructing its facilities on the former Naval Air Station Richmond, whose three‑mile‑long former base provides an ideal track layout. In 1984 the museum receives statutory recognition from the Florida Legislature, becoming one of the three Official State Railroad Museums and meeting all four statutory criteria for that designation. The site’s historic Hangar 2 tower is rebuilt in 2011, adding a 36‑metre lattice structure that supports public safety communications.
