About Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM)
Built around Southern Pacific steam locomotive 2472, rescued by volunteers from a fairgrounds parking lot in the 1970s, the Golden Gate Railroad Museum preserves steam and passenger railroad equipment and interprets local railroad history. Now settled in Schellville on the historic Northwestern Pacific after earlier homes at Hunters Point and Niles Canyon, the collection comes alive at special events and excursion trains while volunteers carry on restoration work.
History
The Golden Gate Railroad Museum traces its roots to 1972, when Mike Mangini spotted former Southern Pacific 2472, a steam locomotive parked on static display in the San Mateo County Fairgrounds lot since 1959. Granted permission to remove the engine in 1975, weekend volunteers took up its restoration and incorporated as Project 2472. With the boiler rebuilt, the locomotive moved in 1990 to San Francisco's Hunters Point Shipyard, and on April 30, 1991 the 2472 ran under its own power toward display at Railfair '91. Hunters Point remained home until the Navy cancelled all leases in August 2005, forcing the museum to vacate by early 2006; its 12 locomotives and more than 25 pieces of rolling stock went to Sunol on the Niles Canyon Railway, with help from the Feather River Rail Society and the Pacific Locomotive Association, and several pieces were donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in thanks. In January 2017 the museum announced a permanent move to Schellville on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad; the new yard near Victory Station was fenced in late 2018 and the fleet began relocating in March 2020 after passenger cars received updated brake valves and repairs. The museum keeps offices in Redwood City and showcases its restoration work through special events and excursions.
