The preservation organization began in 1975 as Project 2472, created to save Southern Pacific Pacific-type steam locomotive No. 2472. The locomotive was built in 1921, returned to steam in 1990, appeared at Railfair ’91, and participated in later mainline and heritage operations. The group developed a collection and restoration base at San Francisco’s Hunters Point, then moved equipment to Niles Canyon beginning in 2005 and to Schellville beginning in 2017, completing the major move in 2020. In 2024 the museum partnered with Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit to develop the public Cloverdale railbike operation. Today the ride gives visitors a genuine rail-based experience while restoration work continues separately; proposed future Schellville excursions remain plans rather than current tickets.
