Iron Mountain, the county seat of Dickinson County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, took its name from the valuable iron ore found nearby after discoveries in 1849 opened the Menominee iron-bearing district. The city of about 7,500 is known for pasties, bocce ball tournaments, and World Cup ski jumping at the adjacent Pine Mountain Jump, among the largest artificial ski jumps in the world. Other points of interest include the Chapin Mine Steam Pump Engine and the Millie Hill bat cave, one of the Midwest's largest bat hibernacula.
