About Houghton County Historical Museum
Houghton County Historical Museum preserves the Copper Country's mining, processing, transportation, logging, and community history on the former Calumet & Hecla stamp-mill site in Lake Linden. Its Lake Linden & Torch Lake Railroad carries passengers around a four-tenths-mile, three-foot-gauge campus loop. The Trains
The principal steam locomotive is Calumet & Hecla No. 3, a 12-ton, three-foot-gauge industrial tank locomotive ordered from H.K. Porter in 1915. It moved copper concentrate, coal, and other material around the Lake Linden and Hubbell mills and smelters before Calumet & Hecla donated it to the society in 1969. The official 2026 page lists No. 3 for Saturday passenger service and a Plymouth gas locomotive donated from Wisconsin for Wednesday passenger service. Passenger cars, track, and ties complete the loop operation. The museum campus occupies part of the former Calumet & Hecla stamp-mill complex, which the society describes as once the largest copper milling operation in North America.
