About Lomita Railroad Museum

Visitors explore a small public park surrounding a replica 19th‑century depot modeled after Boston & Maine’s Greenwood Station, while viewing a full‑size 1901 Baldwin steam locomotive with its Southern Pacific whaleback tender, a 1910 Union Pacific caboose, an additional Santa Fe caboose, a Union Pacific boxcar and a Union Oil tank car. Scale models, photographs and paintings of California railroading line the station interior, creating an immersive snapshot of regional rail heritage.

History

The Lomita Railroad Museum originates in the early 1960s when Irene Lewis establishes the institution on a single residential lot in Lomita, California. Official records list its formal inception as 1966. The museum opens to the public with a grand opening ceremony on June 23, 1967. The building replicates the 19th‑century Boston & Maine Greenwood Station, and the site also includes a full‑size replica water tower, establishing the museum’s enduring presence as a dedicated venue for California railroad history.

The Trains

The museum’s rolling‑stock collection features a 1901 Baldwin steam locomotive paired with a Southern Pacific “whaleback” tender, a 1910 Union Pacific caboose, an additional Santa Fe caboose, a Union Pacific boxcar, and a Union Oil tank car. These pieces are displayed alongside a full‑size replica water tower on the museum grounds.

Nearby

The Lomita Railroad Museum is a compact California depot stop, with the Angels Flight Railway about 18 mi away for a fuller rail outing.
