About Disneyland Railroad

A 1.2‑mile, 18‑minute steam train circles Disneyland in Anaheim, California, following a narrow‑gauge (3 ft/914 mm) track that loops around most of the park. The ride passes four themed stations and showcases five historic narrow‑gauge locomotives and cars built by WED Enterprises and Baldwin. Operating as an included attraction with park admission, the railroad offers a continuous, scenic tour of the resort’s core lands.

History

The Disneyland Railroad opens to guests on July 17 1955, the same day Disneyland begins operations, after construction that started in August 1954 on the 139‑acre Anaheim site selected in 1953. A sponsorship agreement with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway is finalized on March 29 1955, naming the line the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad; the sponsorship—and the name—last until September 30 1974 when the railroad’s ownership remains with Walt Disney’s personal holding company Retlaw Enterprises and The Walt Disney Company. In the late 1950s and again in the mid‑1960s, two large dioramas are added to the route, and in the mid‑1970s one of the original train cars is converted into a parlor car. During the late 2000s the railroad’s steam locomotives are converted from diesel oil to biodiesel fuel, marking the most recent major operational change.

The Trains

The Disneyland Railroad runs on 3‑foot (914 mm) narrow‑gauge track that measures 1.2 miles in length and circles most of the park, stopping at four stations located in different park lands. Its rolling stock comprises five historic narrow‑gauge steam trains: two locomotives constructed by WED Enterprises and three locomotives originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, each pulling passenger cars modeled after 3‑ft narrow‑gauge Oahu Railway and Land Company coaches.

Nearby
