About Medford Railroad Park
Medford Railroad Park is a city-owned railroad campus animated by five separately organized volunteer groups: Southern Oregon Live Steamers, Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society, Rogue Valley Model Railroad Club, Medford Garden Railroaders, and the Morse Telegraph Club. The Trains
The miniature railway's motive power depends on the volunteers and equipment available that day. Southern Oregon Live Steamers currently names club-owned gas-hydraulic locomotives Southern Pacific No. 8182 and Burlington Nos. 255 and 256, a privately owned electric switcher, and member-owned locomotives; the club says most of its operating steam locomotives burn propane. None is guaranteed for a particular public run. Separately, the Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society preserves full-size equipment including Medco Willamette No. 4, cabooses, a hopper, and a flat car. No. 4 is a restoration and interpretation project—not the miniature train's motive power. The HO layout, garden railway, telegraph collection, full-size equipment, and miniature trains belong to different campus groups and may have different volunteer coverage.

Medford's railroad campus occupies part of a former municipal sewage-treatment site. The City of Medford began developing the partnership in 1979, and Southern Oregon Live Steamers traces its park activity to 1981-1982. The city describes the wider parcel as 49 acres with about seven developed acres. Over time, separate live-steam, full-size railway-history, HO-model, garden-railroad, and telegraph organizations built a volunteer campus. Medco Willamette No. 4, retired in 1959 and acquired by the historical society in 1997, anchors one full-size restoration story while the miniature railway provides the public ride. Keeping those two scales distinct is essential to a truthful visit plan.
