About Midwest Central Railroad
Midwest Central Railroad is a separate volunteer 501(c)(3) narrow-gauge railroad operating within McMillan Park on the Midwest Old Threshers grounds. Its public visitor experience is event-based rather than daily: the operator’s complete current 2026 calendar lists the September 3–7 Reunion, six Midwest Haunted Rails dates in October, and six North Pole Express dates in December. The Trains
Midwest Central’s collection is broader than a single “steam train.” The current official roster includes steam locomotives from Baldwin, H. K. Porter, Lima, Henschel, and other builders, plus Plymouth diesel-hydraulic locomotives, gasoline switcher MW 101, passenger coaches, cabooses, freight cars, and work equipment. The status varies. The operator identifies 1891 Baldwin 2-6-0 No. 6 as its flagship and recounts its 1960 arrival and later boiler and repair work, but does not guarantee it for a current trip. The official D-9 page calls the 1956 Plymouth diesel restored and operating. Baldwin No. 2 has an ongoing frame-up rebuild with a new boiler; Henschel No. 16 left service in 2012 for firebox work. Official history describes long-term leases involving Shay No. 9 and Georgetown Loop No. 12, but the age of that page means current location and lease status require confirmation. Six original-style passenger coaches were built or adapted in the Midwest Central shops, and newer open-air cars later joined them. Treat every roster item as operating, stored, displayed, rebuilt, leased, or maintained only when current first-party evidence says so; no ticket guarantees steam, a locomotive number, a photographed car, or access to shop areas.

Old Threshers rail advocates purchased Davenport saddle tank No. 2056 as the first railroad display.
Volunteers acquired Baldwin Nos. 6 and 2 and operated No. 6 during the Reunion after an intensive restoration and track effort.
The shop-built passenger coach “Mignon” made its first Reunion run.
West Side Lumber three-truck Shay No. 9 and additional equipment arrived from California.

The railroad began with Midwest Old Threshers board members seeking a unique rail component for the show in 1957. They purchased a 1925 Davenport 0-4-0 saddle tank, No. 2056, as an initial display. Founder Stan Matthews and other volunteers then raised more than $7,000 through a lifetime-pass campaign and acquired 1891 Baldwin No. 6, 1906 Baldwin No. 2, and supporting equipment from the former Argent Lumber operation in 1960. Old Threshers asked the rail group to form a separate organization, creating Midwest Central Railroad with its own board and preservation mission. Volunteers laid track, built a roundhouse, restored No. 6 for the 1960 Reunion, and completed the roughly 1.25-mile loop within two years. Coaches, cabooses, water facilities, a trestle, Shay No. 9, Henschel No. 16, diesel equipment, and other cars expanded the operation. The railroad’s shop skills also inspired a separate locomotive-rebuilding business before founder Matthews died in 1994. The surviving nonprofit continues through volunteer operation, restoration, education, named public events, and community participation. That institutional separation remains important today: Midwest Central’s narrow-gauge train and Midwest Electric’s standard-gauge trolley are complementary but distinct visitor rides.
