History

See full history

The Museum of Northwest Colorado begins its public life in 1964 when it opens as the Moffat County Museum, created to collect and preserve artifacts of the Old West. In 1991 the museum moves from the Moffat County Courthouse into the former Colorado State Armory at 590 Yampa Avenue, a building that had been constructed in 1922 and designed by architect John J. Huddart. The same year the institution records its formal inception as a museum‑arsenal entity. One year later, in 1992, the armory building is added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historic significance. The museum’s cowboy‑gear collection attains national recognition for its rarity and breadth.

Around the Depot

The museum stands in Craig, the county seat and most populous town of Moffat County in northwestern Colorado. Craig grew up where Fortification Creek meets the Yampa River, near earlier settlements known as Yampa and Windsor, and its chamber of commerce bills it as the 'Elk Hunting Capital of the World.' The town is also the end of the line for the railroad: a Union Pacific branch, originally built by the Denver and Salt Lake Railway toward Salt Lake City, was completed only as far west as Craig.
