About Colorado Railroad Museum
Colorado Railroad Museum is the public-facing name of the museum owned and operated by the nonprofit Colorado Railroad Historical Foundation. The Trains
Regular 2026 rides use historic coaches behind one of the museum's diesel-electric locomotives, while selected Sunday dates use a Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose motorcar. The museum says most train operations are chair-lift accessible but the historic Goose is not. D&RGW narrow-gauge steam locomotive No. 491 returned to service in 2014 and remains operating; special-event pages, rather than the collection roster, control whether it or another locomotive is assigned. Harvest Haunt promises a coal-burning Colorado steam locomotive, and the Polar Express page promises an authentic coal-fired steam locomotive without naming the engine. Displayed equipment must not be presented as operating merely because it appears in the collection.

Robert W. Richardson and Cornelius W. Hauck opened the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden in 1959 after Richardson's growing narrow-gauge collection moved from Alamosa. The nonprofit Colorado Railroad Historical Foundation formed in 1964 to own and operate the museum. The institution added the Richardson library in 1997, completed its track loop in 1999, and opened the roundhouse and turntable in 2000. Its mission remains preserving and explaining railroading in the Rocky Mountain region through acquisition, research, exhibition, and education.
