About New Hope Railroad
Heritage trains powered by steam and diesel depart from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and travel the 16.7‑mile line to Lahaska, winding through Bucks County’s historic countryside. The excursion cars are former Reading Company passenger coaches built between 1914 and 1932, offering period interiors while the locomotive whistles echo along the former New Hope Branch. Scenic views of rolling farmland and historic villages accompany the ride, delivering a tangible glimpse of early‑20th‑century rail travel.

History
The line that the New Hope Railroad now operates was extended to its terminal at New Hope, Pennsylvania on March 29 1891. After electric service reached Hatboro, steam trains above that point were replaced by a doodlebug in 1932, and passenger service between Hatboro and New Hope ended in June 1952. In the early 1960s, a group of enthusiasts led by Philadelphia attorney Kenneth Souser formed Steam Trains, Inc.; the organization purchased the 16.7‑mile branch from the Reading Company for $200,000 on June 20 1966 and began excursion operations on August 6 1966. Steam Trains, Inc. declared bankruptcy on June 5 1970, after which the Bucks County Industrial Development Corporation bought the trackage in early 1974 and contracted McHugh Brothers Heavy Hauling to run freight service. State funding in the summer of 1976 enabled track rehabilitation, and volunteers from the Buckingham Valley Trolley Association operated passenger service beginning in August 1977; the railroad emerged from its decade‑long bankruptcy on June 30 1979. After a volunteer‑run weekend excursion program resumed on July 3 1980, the line was sold to the for‑profit Bucks County Railroad Preservation and Restoration Corporation in 1990, and its reporting mark was changed to NHRR in 1993.
The Trains
The New Hope Railroad operates over the 16.7‑mile former New Hope Branch, with regular heritage excursions running between New Hope and Lahaska and occasional trips extending to Buckingham Valley. Its passenger fleet relies on former Reading Company cars built between 1914 and 1932, while both steam and diesel locomotives provide motive power for the excursions.
