About Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad runs historic trains along 46 miles of former Southern Pacific track, threading the edge of Tillamook Bay, the Oregon Coast and the Nehalem River forest between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, with occasional extensions to Wheeler, the Salmonberry River canyon and Nehalem River. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2003, the heritage line offers steam‑powered excursions, cab rides and seasonal themed trips, while Garibaldi Station provides wheelchair‑lift access.

History

The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2003, establishing its status as a heritage railway and nonprofit entity. In December 2007 the line suffers extensive damage from the Great Coastal Gale, with landslides and a bridge washout that severs the route from the broader North American rail network. Beginning in 2014 the railroad confronts a series of legal challenges over reconstruction work in the Salmonberry River corridor, and in March 2015 a court decision exempts the OCSR from state environmental regulations. In August 2025 the City of Rockaway Beach requests removal of the tracks for a trail extension, putting the railroad’s future in jeopardy. Later that same year, on October 8 2025, a fire damages a wood trestle near Tillamook, rendering that section of track impassable pending repair.

The Trains

The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad runs its vintage equipment over 46 miles (74 km) of former Southern Pacific track between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, with additional excursions reaching Wheeler, the Nehalem River and the Salmonberry River canyon. Its collection includes historic locomotives and passenger cars, though the specific numbers and models are not detailed in the available sources. The line operates on standard‑gauge track, the same gauge used by the former Southern Pacific line.
