About Petaluma Trolley

History

Petaluma Trolley draws its identity from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railroad, the 600-volt DC electric interurban that ran between Petaluma, Sebastopol, Forestville, and Santa Rosa, with company-owned steamboats linking Petaluma to San Francisco. The Northwestern Pacific purchased the P&SR in 1932 and all trolley passenger service ended on July 1 of that year, though the line ran on under wire for freight until January 24, 1947, when Motor No. 1008 hauled a final carload of horses to Liberty and diesel locomotives took over from the electric motors. A piece of the original right-of-way survives along the waterfront in Petaluma, and volunteers have worked to reactivate that stretch as a trolley line once again; as part of that effort, the Petaluma Trolley group restored original P&SR car No. 8.
