About Potter Place Railroad Station
The Potter Place Railroad Station stands on Depot Street in Andover, New Hampshire, adjacent to the Northern Rail Trail that follows the former Boston and Maine Railroad right‑of‑way. Built in 1874, the single‑story wood‑frame building retains its hip roof, decorative brackets and track‑facing bay that once operated a semaphore signal. Today the station houses the Andover Historical Society Museum, featuring a period station‑master’s office and an early‑20th‑century caboose, and opens on summer weekends.
History
The Northern Railroad opened its line between Concord, New Hampshire, and White River Junction, Vermont, in 1847, establishing the route that would later host the Potter Place station. The station itself is constructed in 1874 and is recognized as one of the best‑preserved 19th‑century railroad stations in Merrimack County, one of only fourteen surviving stations in the county at the time of its National Register of Historic Places listing in 1989. The Boston and Maine Railroad sold the building in 1961, after which a careful restoration was undertaken during the 1970s. The Andover Historical Society assumed ownership in 1983 and now operates the structure as its primary museum.
The Trains
Alongside the 1874 station, the museum keeps an early-20th-century caboose and a period station-master's office, open on summer weekends.
