History
Rail service reached what is now Ashland, New Hampshire — then known as Holderness Village and still part of Holderness — in 1849, with the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad's first station handling passengers and freight together. In 1869 the railroad erected the present depot on Depot Street to give passengers a station separate from the freight building, and its successor, the Concord & Montreal Railroad, extensively remodeled it in 1891, producing the look it keeps today: a single-story, post-and-beam wooden structure under a hipped slate roof with wide, knee-braced overhangs, its trackside projection housing the station agent's ticket office. The station was sold into private hands in 1960 and given to the Ashland Historical Society in 1980, which now operates it as a local museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, recognized for how faithfully it preserves the character of a rural nineteenth-century New England depot.
