About Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati
At the Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati, visitors explore a 4‑acre campus at 315 Southern Avenue in Covington, Kentucky, surrounded by 80 historic railroad pieces. The centerpiece is Pennsylvania Railroad E8 locomotive #5888, currently under restoration beside the Juliet baggage car, one of only 47 built between 1917 and 1922.
History
The Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati is founded in 1975 when a club of local railroad enthusiasts organizes to run passenger cars on Amtrak trains. After several members purchase cars for that purpose, Amtrak tightens its passenger‑car restrictions in the late 1980s, ending the excursions but leaving the equipment as the core of the museum’s collection. At that point the organization shifts its mission to preservation, focusing on the equipment that once served the seven railroads that entered Cincinnati.
