About Schoharie Valley Railroad Museum

Few places preserve an entire 1870s short-line terminal: at the Schoharie Valley Railroad Complex you can take in the passenger station, the combined freight and locomotive house, the office, an old mill building, a storage facility, and four coal silos, all raised around 1875. The grouping is a National Register historic district in the village of Schoharie, the county seat first settled by Palatine Germans around 1718.

The museum centers on the Schoharie Valley Railroad Complex, a national historic district in the village of Schoharie, New York. The complex of buildings was erected about 1875 by the Schoharie Valley Railroad, a short line of just four miles, and takes in five contributing buildings and four contributing structures: the passenger station, a combined freight and locomotive house, the railroad office, an old mill building, a storage facility, and four coal silos. The little railroad survived into the Second World War era before being abandoned in 1942, leaving its terminal grouping behind remarkably intact; the complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It stands in a village first settled around 1718 by Palatine Germans, the seat of Schoharie County, whose other Register-listed landmarks include the Old Stone Fort and the Schoharie County Courthouse Complex.
