About SONO Switch Tower Museum

At the SoNo Switch Tower Museum, visitors observe active Northeast Corridor traffic through a live webcam that streams passing trains directly from the historic 1896 tower in Norwalk, Connecticut. The tower, originally built by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad to manage the junction of the New Haven Line and the Danbury Branch, remains a focal point for railfans, offering real‑time views of one of the region’s busiest rail arteries.

History

The SoNo Switch Tower was built in 1896 by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad to control the junction between the New Haven Line and the Danbury Branch. It remained in active service under the New Haven and later under Metro‑North Railroad until it was decommissioned in 1986 when dispatching was centralized at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. After its decommissioning, the structure was preserved and operates today as a railway museum.
