History

The Maywood Station building dates to 1872, when the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway erected the structure in Maywood, New Jersey. Beginning in July 2002, the volunteer‑run Maywood Station Historical Committee, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, undertook an extensive restoration of the station. The restored building was listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 (building #03000487). The museum opened to the public in September 2004 and continues to be operated and staffed by the committee’s volunteers. The museum’s NYS&W S‑2 locomotive #206 was placed on the State of New Jersey Register of Historic Places on 10 September 2009 and entered the National Register of Historic Places on 19 March 2010.
