History
The Southeastern Railway Museum opens its doors in 1970, founded by the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. In 2000 the museum receives the designation as Georgia’s official transportation history museum, a statewide superlative that underscores its role in preserving rail heritage. Since its inception, the museum remains under the stewardship of the founding nonprofit organization, with no recorded changes in ownership.
The Trains
The museum’s collection includes more than 90 pieces of rolling stock, among them Southern Railway “Big John” hopper car No. 8717 and Southern Railway 86‑foot boxcar No. 9690, as well as a variety of steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses and maintenance‑of‑way equipment. Visitors can board restored cabooses for short rides that travel the length of the property’s track, and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month a dome car is also available for rides.
