The Trains

Tri-State's signature piece of preserved motive power is an ALCO Century 424 diesel: built as Toledo, Peoria and Western 801, it later ran as Morristown & Erie 19 and is preserved by the society, currently in storage at Boonton, New Jersey.

History

See full history

The Tri-State Railway Historical Society, a chapter of the NRHS, has built its reputation on documenting the railroads of the New Jersey region, with particular depth in Lackawanna Railroad history. The society published Don Dorflinger's "Farewell to the Lackawanna Cut-Off" series in its Block Line journal in 1984–1985, and in 1987 issued Larry Lowenthal and William T. Greenberg Jr.'s book "The Lackawanna Railroad in Northwestern New Jersey." Tri-State is one of the member groups of the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, a coalition whose collection was concentrated at the Boonton railyard in 2010, and the chapter's own preservation work is likewise centered on Boonton.
