About Whippany Railway Museum
Whippany Railway Museum is a volunteer nonprofit preserving New Jersey railroad history in and around a restored Morristown & Erie freight house. The regular museum season combines indoor exhibits, an operating O-scale layout, a gift shop, and a large outdoor collection on an active freight railroad. On selected dates, fundraising excursion trains make a 10-mile, approximately 45-minute round trip from Whippany toward Roseland and return. The train ride, ordinary museum admission, seasonal Pumpkin Patch Train, and separately produced Polar Express program follow different calendars and ticket terms.

Visitors can choose caboose seating or premium passage in restored Lackawanna subscription club car No. 2454 and Central Railroad of New Jersey club car Jersey Coast on the museum’s regular excursions. The broader collection includes Southern Railway steam locomotive No. 385, fireless locomotive No. 7240, cabooses, passenger cars, freight equipment, railbus No. 10, handcars, and other artifacts. No. 385 has not operated under steam since 1978 and is displayed; the operator does not promise steam power for current public departures. Locomotive assignment, consist, seating, and availability can change.
History
Morris County Central began tourist operation at Whippany, and volunteers formed the original railroad museum.
The Morristown & Erie freight house was moved across four tracks to its present museum location.
The collection reopened near Newfoundland as the Pequannock Valley Transportation Museum after following the excursion railroad.
Morris County Central operated its final train, while the museum organization continued.
Museum property returned to Whippany as volunteers rebuilt the threatened freight house and adopted the Whippany Railway Museum name.
The restored Whippany Railway Museum held its grand opening on October 26.

The museum began in 1965 alongside the Morris County Central tourist railroad, initially displaying memorabilia in part of a Morristown & Erie freight house. The building moved across the tracks in 1967. When the tourist railroad relocated to Newfoundland in the 1970s, the museum followed and became the Pequannock Valley Transportation Museum. After the Morris County Central ended in 1980, members returned to the badly deteriorated Whippany freight house, restored it, reorganized under the present name, and held a grand opening on October 26, 1985. Today the museum continues that preservation work at the Whippany yard while Morristown & Erie remains the active railroad host.
