About Two Harbors Duluth and Iron Range Depot Museum
Explore Lake County's pioneer past inside the grand 1907 Duluth and Iron Range depot in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Exhibits range from early Native American history to the mining, logging, and railroad industries that built the region, plus military service, children's toys and dolls, butterflies, and local collections. Outside, a 2-6-0 Mogul steam locomotive with the first style of ore cars and a caboose stands on display beside the historic depot.
History
The museum occupies the historic Two Harbors station on Sixth Street, a large two-story depot built in 1907 — the third to stand on the site. The Minnesota Iron Company created the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad in 1883 and platted Two Harbors two years later, putting up depots to handle its business; the D&IR ran its first main line train between Two Harbors and Soudan in 1884, and once rails reached Duluth the station became a transfer hub for travelers as well as lumber and mining supplies. In July 1938 the railway merged with the Duluth, Missabe and Northern to form the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway. Passenger service ended in 1961 and the depot was donated to Lake County; in 1983 the building joined the National Register of Historic Places under its historic D&IR Company Depot name. The Lake County Historical Society now runs it as its Depot Museum, with exhibits centered on Lake County's pioneer past.
