About Minnesota Discovery Center Trolley
Minnesota Discovery Center is a nonprofit museum, research center, recreation campus, and seasonal trolley destination interpreting the land, mines, people, and work of Minnesota's Iron Range. Its 660-acre campus combines a 33,000-square-foot museum, outdoor historic structures and mining equipment, a research center, playground and Play Studio, seasonal mini golf, trail connections, a gift shop, and the trolley route to the Old Glen Mining Location. The institution opened in 1977 as the state-operated Iron Range Interpretative Center with 34 exhibits. The Iron Range Research Center followed in 1980, and later development added an amphitheater, the Ironworld USA Railroad connecting Glen Location and Festival Park, and a Civilian Conservation Corps history center as the destination adopted the Ironworld name. A state-appointed task force formed the Ironworld Development Corporation nonprofit in 2003. In 2007 the site transitioned to the present nonprofit Minnesota Discovery Center, which continues to interpret Iron Range industry, immigration, culture, geology, labor, recreation, and genealogy across the museum and outdoor campus.
