About White Mountain Central Railroad
The White Mountain Central Railroad runs a 2‑kilometre standard‑gauge loop through Clark’s Bears in Lincoln, New Hampshire, departing from the former Freedomland U.S.A. station. The steam‑powered train travels north past a locomotive shop, crosses the Pemigewasset River on a historic 1904 Howe‑truss covered bridge—the only remaining Howe railroad bridge worldwide—and then weaves through woods before passing beneath the Interstate 93 ramp to complete the 30‑minute round trip.
History
Construction of the White Mountain Central Railroad begins in 1955, laying the groundwork for a purpose‑built tourist line within Clark’s Bears. The line opens to the public on July 30, 1958, becoming one of the few New England attractions to run regular steam service on standard‑gauge track. In 1964 the owners acquire the former Freedomland U.S.A. station building and relocate a 1904 Howe‑truss covered bridge from East Montpelier, Vermont, reassembling it over the Pemigewasset River at the park. The bridge’s relocation marks the only surviving Howe railroad bridge in the world, according to the New Hampshire state inventory.
The Trains
The White Mountain Central Railroad runs on standard‑gauge track for about 2 kilometres, departing from the former Freedomland U.S.A. station at Clark’s Bears, traveling north through the park, crossing the Pemigewasset River on a 1904 Howe‑truss covered bridge, passing a small locomotive shop, being pursued by the “Wolfman” in a primitive prospector car, and finally passing under the Interstate 93 ramp to its terminus. The line’s rolling stock includes the “Wolfman” prospector car and a historic locomotive that operates regular steam service, while the station building and the covered bridge are original structures relocated to the railroad’s route.
