Union Pacific described the 2026 eastern leg as the first time a Big Boy had steamed across the Mississippi River and into the Ohio Valley since the class was built. per up.com
ALCO built 25 Big Boys at its Schenectady, New York, works between 1941 and 1944, all for Union Pacific. per trains.com They were designed to haul heavy freight over the Wasatch Range between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. per up.com At the time, they were among the largest steam locomotives ever built.
Union Pacific's network covers the western United States, leaving no UP route for a Big Boy east of roughly Chicago. per up.com The 2026 eastern leg used Norfolk Southern trackage for the portion beyond Union Pacific's traditional network. per trains.com
The 2026 route carried the locomotive beyond St. Louis and into the Northeast for the first time.
The eastern leg brought No. 4014 into Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania for the first time. Its first Pennsylvania stop was North East on June 9, 2026. per cbsnews.com
From June 15 through June 30, operating No. 4014 stood beside Steamtown's static No. 4012 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The National Park Service described it as the only place on the 2026 tour where visitors could see two Big Boys side by side. per nps.gov
