About Frelinghuysen Arboretum
Frelinghuysen Arboretum is the closest substantial local experience to Whippany Railway Museum by road. It works especially well when a family wants room to walk, picnic, or decompress after the compact and gravel-covered railway grounds.
The 124-acre public landscape combines formal gardens, nearly 2,000 specimen trees and plantings, woodlands, meadows, walking trails, and a historic mansion. A seasonal cell-phone tour and official garden and trail maps support a self-guided visit without committing to another fixed tour time.
Access conditions vary across the property. The gardens around the mansion and Haggerty Education Center use paved, generally level paths with curb cuts, and the center has a ramp and elevator. Farther routes include dirt paths and elevation changes that are not suitable for every mobility device.
