The Trains
The current official site identifies the outdoor railway as two-foot gauge and says its riding cars are undergoing necessary repairs. It does not publish a current locomotive roster, engine power, car count, lift specification, or date-specific assignment. A licensed June 2023 photograph documents green-and-yellow Engine No. 1 at the exact property, but the image does not establish today’s mechanical status or next consist. The depot contains a 12-by-24-foot HO layout with more than 200 feet of mainline, interleaved HOn3 mining and logging trackage, and a roughly 20-by-3-foot N-scale layout. Members supply varying model trains, so no prototype, railroad, or scale consist is guaranteed on a visit.

The new city park created an opportunity for the association to propose a live-steam railroad.
A $20,000 award supported track construction using old Carson & Colorado and Silver Peak rail.
The half-mile loop-to-loop railroad opened July 4 and carried nearly 2,000 riders that holiday weekend.
A western extension completed the mile-plus circuit through the park cottonwoods.

The association began pursuing a park railroad after the former central golf-course land became a city park in 1977. Carson City approved the concept, and a 1980 Fair and Recreation Committee award helped fund track construction. Volunteers bought 30-pound rail from the former Carson & Colorado Railroad and additional rail from the Silver Peak area. The Carson & Mills Park Railroad opened July 4, 1981 as a half-mile loop-to-loop line and carried nearly 2,000 riders during the holiday weekend. A westward extension completed in 1982 brought the route beyond one mile through the park’s cottonwoods. The association credits more than 7,500 volunteer hours, prison trustees, service clubs, local businesses, and city partners for the original build.
