The Trains

The museum's largest artifact is its building — a former Tavares and Gulf railroad depot dating to 1913. Inside, exhibits depict Central Florida's railroading history, with a highlight being the museum's large collection of railroad dining car china.

History

See full history

The Central Florida Railway Historical Society operates the Central Florida Railroad Museum at 101 South Boyd Street in Winter Garden, Florida, which opened in 1983 inside a former Tavares and Gulf depot built in 1913. The depot stands within the Winter Garden Downtown Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the museum is run in conjunction with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. Railroading is woven into the town's own story: the arrival of the Orange Belt Railroad, together with growing citrus, turpentine, and lumber production, drove Winter Garden's growth through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — the era the museum's exhibits on Central Florida railroading interpret. Admission is free, and the museum welcomes visitors Tuesday through Saturday.

Around the Depot

The museum sits in downtown Winter Garden, fourteen miles west of downtown Orlando, with Lake Apopka bordering the city to the north. The surrounding Winter Garden Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, gathers restaurants, shops, and cafés alongside two museums and a performing arts venue — the refurbished, historic Garden Theatre on West Plant Street. A onetime citrus town whose first businesses grew up along Plant Street, Winter Garden has rejuvenated its downtown into a mix of small-town atmosphere and trendy businesses, and the West Orange Trail counts among its attractions.
