History

See full history

Zephyrhills grew from the town of Abbott, established on April 18, 1888, and took its present name in 1910 after Captain Howard B. Jeffries — a Civil War Union veteran from Pennsylvania — purchased 35,000 acres and formed the Zephyrhills Colony Company to build a community for Civil War veterans; the town incorporated in 1914. The depot at the center of the museum is the city's 1927 Atlantic Coast Line station, which the City of Zephyrhills bought from CSX Railroad in 1989. The 2,700-square-foot building was relocated 200 feet west of its original spot, restored, and opened to the public as the Zephyrhills Depot Museum in 1998. It now stands at a city park near the municipal airport, in a community whose historic core was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 — and CSX freights still roll through the east side of town, where the Yeoman Subdivision becomes the Wildwood Subdivision.
