The Trains

The farm's signature pieces are two Crown Metal Products 4-4-0 steam locomotives built in 1964 for the Six Gun Territory amusement park in Silver Springs, Florida — the Sam Houston, engine No. 4, acquired in 2017, and the Robert E. Lee, engine No. 7, acquired in 2019, both bought from the Historic Jefferson Railway, where the pair had worked since 1985. They join the farm's own narrow gauge train attraction, which carries riders on weekend trips and seasonal Pumpkin Patch Express and Polar Express runs, and the preserved former Six Gun Territory train station that now stands on the property.

History

See full history

Kirby Family Farm in Williston, Florida pairs a family farm and event venue with a narrow gauge train attraction that has become a preservation home for relics of Florida's lost Six Gun Territory amusement park. The farm holds the former train station of the Southern Railway & Six Gun, the narrow gauge heritage railroad that ran at the Silver Springs park, and it hosts the Six Gun Territory Wild West Weekend and Reunion event each year. The farm has also brought the park's original locomotives back to Florida: the Sam Houston, a 4-4-0 steam engine built in 1964 by Crown Metal Products for Six Gun Territory, was purchased from the Historic Jefferson Railway in 2017, and its sister engine the Robert E. Lee followed from the same railway in 2019. Today the farm's railroad anchors seasonal programming, with weekend train rides plus Pumpkin Patch Express and Polar Express events.

Around the Depot

Williston is a small city of about 3,000 people in Levy County on Florida's Nature Coast, within the Gainesville metropolitan area. Established before 1885 by founder J. M. Willis, the town sits above an extensive underground spring system — its Devil's Den and Blue Grotto are popular diving spots. Williston hosts the Central Florida Harvest and Peanut Festival every October and was the birthplace of Foolish Pleasure, the 1975 Kentucky Derby winner. Summers here are hot and humid, winters generally mild.
