Griffith Historical Park and Depot Museum

Griffith Historical Park and Railroad Museum, run by the Griffith Historical Society in this Lake County town on the edge of metropolitan Chicago, preserves two National Register-listed pieces of local railroad infrastructure that were moved into the park to save them. The first is the Griffith Grand Trunk Depot, a simple one-story frame station about 20 by 30 feet with a steeply pitched hipped roof, overhanging eaves, and a projecting three-sided bay, built by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in 1911; it remained in service until 1980, the same year it was relocated to its present spot in the park. Beside it stands the E.J. & E. Griffith Interlocking Tower, a three-story brick tower 30 feet tall erected in 1924 by the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway, which stayed in operation until 1999 and was moved to the park in 2000. Both structures were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
