Bruce Williams Zaccagnino began building model-rail scenes in his home's basement in 1972, expanding the work as public interest grew. Northlandz moved into its current purpose-built home and opened there in 1996. Guinness recognized its long small-scale model railway in 1997, a historical achievement rather than a safe claim that no later attraction has surpassed it. In 2019, ownership passed to WBM, which chose to preserve and renovate the attraction.
