History

The Pueblo Railway Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose collection sits on the tracks directly behind Pueblo Union Depot, the landmark Richardsonian Romanesque station erected in 1889-1890 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, within the Union Avenue Historic Commercial District. In its prime the depot hosted five railroads — the Denver & Rio Grande Western, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, the Colorado & Southern, the Missouri Pacific, and the Rock Island — and welcomed Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson at trackside. Regular passenger service is long gone, with Union Pacific and BNSF now sharing the tracks through town, and the privately owned depot waits on proposals like Front Range Passenger Rail. Behind it, the museum keeps the railroading story tangible with historic Santa Fe equipment, Rocket cars, and Test Center pieces, open to visitors as self-guided tours.
