History

See full history

Sudlersville's depot was built in 1885 and dates back to the Queen Anne's and Kent Railroad, the company that first brought trains to this Eastern Shore town: the QA&KR began running from Sudlersville in June 1870 and pushed through to Centreville on August 1, 1871, quickly doing good business in wood, lumber, peaches, lime, grain, and passengers. The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad bought a controlling interest in 1877; the Pennsylvania Railroad acquired the PW&B in 1881 and folded the line into its Delaware Division; and on January 23, 1899 the QA&KR was merged into the Delaware Railroad. The station outlived them all — it is counted among the line's few surviving remnants and still stands today as a museum. The historic building was purchased in 1987 and restored by the Sudlersville Community Betterment Club, a civic organization established in 1916 by members of the town.
