The museum's home of Charles City is the seat of Floyd County, a Cedar River town of about 7,400 in northern Iowa. It is best known as the birthplace of the American tractor: the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company coined the word "tractor" here in 1901 and built the first successful production-model tractor line in 1903. Visitors will also find the Alvin Miller House, a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian design, the Art Deco Charles Theatre, the Floyd County Museum, and Iowa's first whitewater park, right downtown on the Cedar River.
