About Cape Cod Central Railroad

Cape Cod Central Railroad is Cape Rail's heritage passenger operation over former New Haven Railroad track between Hyannis and Buzzards Bay. The current public program is not one interchangeable ride: narrated excursions use Hyannis, West Barnstable, or Buzzards Bay; lunch and brunch normally leave Hyannis; dinner trains use Hyannis, Buzzards Bay, and select North Falmouth dates; and THE POLAR EXPRESS uses its own holiday product. Routes, duration, station, classes, age rules, meal service, and accessibility differ. A regular Hyannis excursion travels through West Barnstable and Sandwich toward the canal without crossing the railroad bridge, while the Buzzards Bay canal excursion is planned to cross the bridge before running along the canal. Marine traffic has priority, so even a planned crossing can be delayed. Start with the live dated ticket, then build parking, arrival, mobility, meal, and nearby plans around that exact product.

The Trains

The operator identifies two former New Haven Railroad FL9 locomotives as historically important because they returned in 2018 to tracks where that type worked in the 1950s and 1960s. It describes the passenger-car collection as spanning 1917 to 1990 and markets several distinct interiors: standard excursion seating, First Class, upper-level full-length dome seating, and the adult-oriented Deluxe Club Car. Dining First Class may use renovated 1937 cars or a lower-level dome area, while Premium Class uses the upper dome. Historic equipment creates real differences in stair access, booth space, wheelchair width, restroom accessibility, and climate. Rail service reached Sandwich in 1848 and expanded across Cape Cod under several predecessor companies. The New Haven era left the route, stations, and equipment identity most visible today. The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge opened in 1935, and year-round passenger service on the Cape ended in 1959. The present Cape Cod Central Railroad was founded in 1999 with no corporate relationship to the nineteenth-century company of the same name. It now forms the passenger side of Cape Rail, alongside freight carrier Massachusetts Coastal Railroad, using roughly 27 miles of former New Haven route between Hyannis and Buzzards Bay. The business combines narrated landscape interpretation with rail dining and seasonal events rather than operating as public transportation.
