About Nickel Plate Express

Themed dining and excursion trains plus pedal-powered rail bikes on the former Nickel Plate route between Atlanta and Tipton, IN; FareHarbor ticketing.

History

The Nickel Plate Express carries on passenger service over a stretch of former Nickel Plate Road trackage in Hamilton County, Indiana — a line originally built for the Indianapolis and Peru Railroad and owned in recent decades by the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority. For half a century the route's excursions were the work of the Indiana Transportation Museum, based in Noblesville's Forest Park; after that museum's 2018 eviction and eventual dissolution, the line passed to the ownership and operation of the Nickel Plate Express. The rehabilitated Forest Park site became the Express's home in 2022, and the relocated former Nickel Plate depot from Hobbs, Indiana — bought by the old museum in 1967 and moved to the park in May 1968 — was repurposed by the new operator. Today, per the operator's listing, the railroad offers themed dining and excursion trains, plus pedal-powered rail bikes, along the route between Atlanta and Tipton.
