About Linden Depot Museum

Visit a rare surviving junction depot where two historic railroads once crossed. The Linden Depot Museum occupies the former Monon station in Linden, Indiana, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, at the spot where the Toledo, St. Louis and Western met the Monon line. Run by local historians together with the Monon Railroad Historical/Technical Society, it preserves the small-town junction story.

History

Linden's railroad story begins in 1852, when the New Albany and Salem Railroad — the line later famous as the Monon — pushed through Montgomery County, Indiana. The old stage road between Crawfordsville and Linden was handed over to the railroad as an inducement to route the line through town, and the first Linden depot went up that same year on a site behind today's post office. In 1881 the building was moved to its present location, where the newly built Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad crossed the Monon, making Linden a two-railroad junction town. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Today the museum operates in the disused Monon station as a joint venture: it is run by the Linden-Madison Township Historical Society in partnership with the Monon Railroad Historical/Technical Society, keeping the memory of Indiana's beloved Monon and the crossing that defined the town alive.
