About Northern Ohio Railway Museum

Riding historic streetcars along more than a mile of restored interurban track, visitors travel through the Chippewa Valley’s 42‑acre museum grounds near Chippewa Lake, Ohio. The demonstration railroad weaves two former Cleveland and Southwestern right‑of‑way miles, offering a scenic loop that will eventually expand to a five‑mile round trip. Housed in the Anson W. Bennett and John R. McCarthy carhouses, the collection includes ten streetcars and an interurban coach, all maintained for public exhibition.

History

The Northern Ohio Railway Museum was founded in 1965 as a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to preserving transit equipment in northern Ohio. It received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service in 1966 and was incorporated under Ohio law in 1976. In 1997 the museum erected the Anson W. Bennett Carhouse, followed by the construction of the Rowen S. Prunkard Maintenance Facility in 2000, and the John R. McCarthy Carhouse in 2003. By 2020 the museum’s collection included ten street cars, one interurban coach, and a fleet of maintenance vehicles, reflecting steady growth since its inception.

The Trains

As of 2020 the Northern Ohio Railway Museum’s rolling stock includes ten street cars, one interurban coach, and a variety of right‑of‑way maintenance cars. The museum’s property contains two miles of former Cleveland and Southwestern interurban right‑of‑way, with more than one mile of demonstration track already laid and a master plan that calls for a three‑mile line capable of a five‑mile round‑trip.
