About Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum
Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum preserves Mahoning Valley iron-and-steel history and operates the 24-inch-gauge J&L Narrow Gauge Railroad. Its currently verified 2026 public rail experience is the adult, hands-on Steam Locomotive Engineer for a Day course—not an ordinary passenger excursion. The official J&L page describes a 24-inch-gauge interplant railroad, a 5-ton Brookville gasoline locomotive and four 40-ton 0-4-0T Porter steam locomotives—one in service, one under restoration and two in storage. No. 58, acquired in 2014 and first fired in November 2018, is identified for the current Engineer-for-a-Day course. The static 2016 collection images are not assignment evidence.
History
The William Tod rolling-mill engine was built in downtown Youngstown for Brier Hill Steel.
The Tod Engine ended its industrial working period.

The museum interprets Youngstown's iron-and-steel industry through the J&L Narrow Gauge Railroad, the William Tod rolling-mill engine and related collections. The 1914 Tod Engine was built in downtown Youngstown for Brier Hill Steel, worked until 1979, was cosmetically restored in 2014 and entered an operating-restoration effort in 2023.
