About Stewartstown Railroad Company
Riding the Stewartstown Railroad offers a glimpse of 19th‑century Pennsylvania across a 7.4‑mile standard‑gauge line that links Stewartstown with New Freedom. Trains depart from the 1914 Stewartstown Station, delivering coach or caboose rides that travel roughly one and a half miles out and back through rolling farmland. Seasonal motorcar excursions cover the full route, while historic holiday trains add themed scenery along the track.

History
The Stewartstown Railroad is chartered in 1884 by local citizens and begins regular service in 1885, retaining its original corporate charter to the present. In 1906 it acquires the New Park & Fawn Grove Railroad, operates that line until 1935, and experiences a series of failed extension attempts in 1906, 1909 and 1924. Passenger service ends in 1952, the line closes in 1972 after Hurricane Agnes destroys the connecting Northern Central track, and it remains idle until the former Northern Central segment reopens between New Freedom and York in 1985. After a heritage revival that ceases in 2004, a Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad group forms in 2006, reopens the 1914 station in 2008 and restores limited excursion service the same year. An adverse abandonment filing in July 2011 is granted in November 2012, leading to debt repayment by donors in 2013; by 2015 a volunteer crew supports operations, and in January 2021 the railroad acquires a former Missouri‑Kansas‑Texas maintenance car for handicap access.
The Trains
The Stewartstown line runs 7.4 mi between Stewartstown and New Freedom on its original right‑of‑way. Current passenger equipment includes former Reading Railroad coach 1341, returned to service in December 2016, an open‑air car built by the Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad in June 2018, and a former Missouri‑Kansas‑Texas Railroad maintenance car acquired in January 2021 for handicap access. Earlier rolling stock comprised motorcar #7, purchased in 1923, and wooden passenger cars numbered 4, 5 and 113, all retired by that year.
