About Storybook Land Train Depot Museum
History
The depot sits inside Storybook Land, a children's-storybook-themed park connected to the Wylie Park Recreation Area in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where a train carries visitors through grounds dotted with a castle, petting-zoo barns, and attractions drawn from classic children's tales. The park's deepest historical thread is its Land of Oz area, which celebrates characters from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Baum himself lived in Aberdeen in the 1880s, running a variety store called Baum's Bazaar and then a newspaper, The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer, before a severe drought sank both ventures and he moved on — years ahead of the book that made him famous. The park has continued to grow, adding the Humpty Dumpty Great Fall Roller Coaster in summer 2015.
Nearby
Aberdeen, the third-most-populous city in South Dakota and seat of Brown County, grew up around the railroads — four lines once intersected here, earning it the nickname Hub City of the Dakotas. L. Frank Baum lived in Aberdeen from 1888 to 1891 before writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the city's Storybook Land park, connected to Wylie Park Recreation Area, features a castle, petting zoos, and a Land of Oz. Aberdeen is also home to Northern State University and the 1927 Capitol Theatre downtown.
