About U.S. Army Transportation Museum

Visitors wander through a 50,000‑square‑foot main hall and four outdoor parks on the Fort Eustis grounds in Newport News, Virginia, viewing nearly 100 Army vehicles ranging from early Liberty trucks to modern armored transports, aircraft, watercraft and rail equipment. Indoor exhibits arrange transportation history in chronological dioramas, while the southern vehicle yard, northern rail display, and aviation pavilion showcase DUKWs, a CH‑54 helicopter, and Berlin duty‑train cars.

History

See full history

The U.S. Army Transportation Museum opens in 1959 when a warehouse on Fort Eustis is converted to display items originally gathered for a recruiting exhibit. A 50,000‑square‑foot main building opens in 1976, followed by an open‑air aviation pavilion in 1987, both financed solely by private donations through the Army Transportation Museum Foundation because the foundation may not receive state or federal grants. In 2021 a CH‑54 helicopter and other artifacts are relocated from the museum to Fort Lee. In June 2025 the Army announces that the museum will close within three years and merge with a logistics museum at Fort Lee (formerly Fort Gregg‑Adams). It remains the only museum devoted exclusively to preserving the history of U.S. Army Transportation.
