History

The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum originates from a 1992 donation when Marshall Johnson contributed car No. 10, which his father had rescued after the Shelburne Falls & Colrain Street Railway ceased operations. Johnson’s gift was accepted by a small group of volunteers who restored the 1896 Wason streetcar to working order and established the museum to preserve the region’s trolley heritage. Since that initial restoration, the museum has remained under the stewardship of the same volunteer organization, operating rides and demonstrations each weekend from late May through October.

The Trains

The museum operates the restored 1896 Wason‑built streetcar known as Trolley No. 10, the sole surviving car from the Shelburne Falls & Colrain Street Railway, on short demonstration runs within the former Buckland Freight yard. Its collection also includes an ex‑Central Vermont caboose, a Central Vermont handcar, and two former MBTA PCC streetcars, all displayed alongside the operating trolley.
